Worst House/Garden

Long before the birth of The Worst of Perth, I wondered about this house and garden inVictoria Park. First, the colour. Yes bad, but the very large garden is also fascinating. The owner has for years maintained it as almost bare yellow sand. It must take an incredible amount of work to keep it bare, but why? And if he loves bare sand, why the few favoured straggly plants in the wasteland? I wonder what desertification tools he has in the shed back there. L and S took this for me. The exterior shot is a little off level, as the owner came out. It was taken from the car as they sped off. Thanks guys. Kudos. Interesting house. Not sure if it belongs in worst of category, but there’s something strange about it.

This one has been panned even in the standard press, however Slanderer doesn’t really show its worst point clearly. The leaping sculpture is supposed to be a young footballer, but is rendered with the face of a 70 year old man. We have seen a lot worse than this one, Slanderer but you are right, it does look a little like they are wearing netball skirts. Slanderer says…

Allow me to submit this image I call “Bronzed Aussies” from my survey of the worst of Fremantle public art.I suspect a few of you have already been exposed to this magnificent specimen of public art stranded on the roundabout outside Freo oval. Unlike Saddam’s monument, this symbol of Aussie rules domination will remain standing in 10,000 years, despite the desperate attempts by citizens with good taste to topple it to the ground with industrial cutting tools and SUVs. You will note that I have taken care to shoot these bronzed aussies from their best angle in order to highlight their pleated miniskirts and the Etruscan stylisation in their serene expressions.

In case we stray too far from Perth, here’s one very close to home on East Parade East Perth, directly opposite East Perth Train Station. Named “The Oasis”. Nice that the concrete wall has been made to match the slate roof in effect and colour.

I’ve had quite a bit of pressure to extend The Worst of Perth to other regions, and even to other countries (!) Before going international however, here’s one from Bunbury south of Perth. The Stig, quite rightly offers this as a contender for worst house. Consider the size of the garage to the house. What better vehicle to put in it, unless you have an aircraft carrier, than this that The Stig saw down Bunbury way too.

Cultural Cringe vs Fed Square

Worst Architecture

How about a comparison between Perth’s embarrassing “Cultural Centre” in Northbridge and its sort of Melbourne equivalent, the truly awful Federation Square. As bad as Melbourne’s Fed Square is, it would actually work quite well in Perth. Melbournians are very keen to tell you how “high tec” Fed square is, which is such a Perth thing to say. The ridiculous design, hopelessly dated long before it left the drawing board would actually suit the brash, shiny, and wealthy WA capital. Fed Square is “A little piece of Perth in the heart of Melbourne.” But don’t get too smug Perth. Don’t forget The Cultural Centre was opened by Brian Burke, and that it looks like this. Perth people though are under no illusion that this space is crap. Most Melbournians seem to be unaware how SO Perth Fed Square is.

The Ashfield of History

Worst Garden/Sculpture

Mazarina who braved the interior of KGB Headquarters just to get me a shot of their carpet, sent me out to Ashfield to snap the house below. I had already been tipped off by Bedford Cath about this poor fellow in the next street as well. Despite having grown up in the era where these were popular, I cannot recall the reason behind people having them. Surely these sad, sad, concrete aborigines go beyond even extreme irony? This at Vinsans salvage in Katanning Street Ashfield.

Mazarina alerted me to this house nearby, but unfortunately the owners were in the garden, so was unable to get the full majesty.
