During The Son of Fed Square debate, the sober discussion of form following function degenerated into a rather squalid concentration on the computer generated figures that populated the scene, and whether some were naked. David Cohen, Anonymous Perthon and Golden1, I’m particularly looking at you. I think that Vivifyer took responsibility for these nudies wandering the scene at one stage. Myself, I dismissed it as some perverted fantasy, until last Friday I was stopped in my tracks by what looked like genuine computer generated “Map of Tassie” on James Street Northbridge. Intense enlargement of the image by CIA labs in Virginia, makes me now think that it is shadow on a silver jumpsuit, although I haven’t entirely discounted crotchless silver jumpsuit. But what an odd image to sell a building. Apart from crotchless, she’s angry, very angry, as if this was once her building, and she has been cheated out of it. She may also be scratching her arse in a tribute to the all time TWOP classic.

The attached neglected (but I believe, still used) church of some obscure denomination wouldn’t be nearly as bizarre if not for the location. Right next to lush, leafy Hyde Park. On the southern side. Very strange, it looks like something from an industrial estate.Oh so that’s the door of Teh Lord. The inscription looks like liquid paper to me.
I wanted to see if The Mines Department building still had a ridiculous display of a mannequin dressed as an oldie timer miner in their lobby, but I was too early to get in. This is their garden on Plain Street though. This poor little fellow is forever condemned to stare towards one of Perth’s ugliest buildings, The Hyatt. Can’t someone turn him around? There must be some Minerals & Energy TWOP readers. Is the “dummy” miner still extant inside? Or perhaps I dreamed it?

Remember the lizard cunnilingus sign at Rainbow Lodge? Look at the mound in the background. It looks remarkably like the Neo Aztec pyramid being constructed by the Bayswater Bassendean(?) Council on Collier Rd. Seems to be part of a business park. I hope that like its Aztec counterparts, 10 000 hearts will be ripped out on opening day. Although it looks bad now, it is a vast improvement on the massive wrecked car dump that used to be there. Cimbali submitted this months ago, but have only just got around to it. Someone told me that the mound is toxic waste from the massive fire that destroyed the site a year or two back, but I don’t know if that’s true. Thanks for the archive shot Cimbali. Another entry for vanished worst. The two shots are taken from almost exactly the same spot.

Have added a new category, “Vanished Worst” to the sidebar, to note all worsts that have been lost since posting. A surprising number have gone already, and there are about 10 that are under threat in some way. (The Norwood is not gone yet, but is finished as a pub.) You will be sad to know that Safeway Autos sign is gone. It would have been forgotten forever without TWOP. The blog does have a value besides slagging off the Convention Centre. Unfortunately, the rotting sculpture in front of the station that Lisa “She-Ra” Scaffidi (thanks Martin) had promised to remove is still there. I think it will still be there in 20 years.

That’s my preferred translation anyway. OK, here it is, the all time most requested TWOP topic, but one that although I have had it photograhed for some time have resisted posting. You know that most of the time TWOP tries to be reasonably light hearted and amusing, but it is just too difficult to be anything but scathing about the place.
The outrageous quote from (I think) the Architects Society President, which boiled down, claimed that the architects were forced to build an ugly structure due to the constraint of the brief from the government really had me seething. Is it any wonder that Perth is what it is with that awful attitude. It is from the constraints, whether cost, location or whatever that innovation and brilliance should come, not a whimper and surrender. Perhaps it is because of the endless backlash over the CC that the Government has overreacted with the the foreshore design, and gone too far the other way, making sure they can’t be accused of blandness this time. It does look like some of The Convention Centre might be masked by the new development. A small mercy.

No matter how tired and surly this fellow might have been, he’d still be better than all the parking machines at Perth Airport put together. I meant to post another of these The Worst of Perth Classics to celebrate 100 000 hits, but things moved a little fast for me, so here’s to 150 000. This is from the carpark near the corner of Roe Street and Lake Street Northbridge. It is still a carpark I think, although I try not to go into Northbridge these days. I’m guessing this is 1983, in my grainy night shot phase. I actually miss those chemicals and the darkroom.
