Spanking The Walrus

Another where public rage may hopefully have been sparked by a The Worst of Perth post. Or maybe it’s just bog standard drunkenness. Back in September, we covered this inexplicable walrus statue in Morley, and labelled it as the worst public sculpture in town. How naive we were back then. We had yet to become acquainted with the Maylands Arse Scratcher or the Station Horror. which has been so in the news lately. The walrus retains a certain dignity with the traffic cone on its head.

疯还是风?Feng or Feng?

Shouldn’t this feng shui car have a flashing light on the roof to part traffic on the way to a feng shui disaster? At least there should be a giant piece of bamboo in a pot, or a toilet with the seat down (to stop money flowing out). What could 3rd generation mean? 3 generations of bullshit seems a layer or two too many. There is also a sticker saying “crazy bitch” on the back window, which could be amusing for chinese speakers, as the word for crazy and wind (feng) sound the same. The chinese calligraphy looks like it has been drawn with a felt pen directly onto the car. Comrade Zoltan also pointed out that the vehicle should really be parked across the bay facing north for the greatest harmony.

A Pox On Your Glass Bricks

Is there a building anywhere in Perth (or even the world) that has been improved by the addition of glass bricks? Is there a building in Perth with glass bricks that doesn’t look a little like a public toilet? What can be said of this recently completed extension in Bedford? Ai Ya! If anyone can find an example of a good looking building with glass bricks, send it to me. The only one I have ever seen where they work well is an old lighthouse.

Another Scalp for TWOP?

After The Worst of Perth’s public art triumph over the perth station sculpture, An Anonymous Perthon asks if the home of the kransky, Dubrovnik Butchers had been feeling the TWOP heat over the manboob pig. Painters recently got rid of the pig for this blander version. I hope it wasn’t down to us, though it is possible, as many search engine results for Dubrovniks or kranskys end up at TWOP. I also hope that the stripes aren’t going. Thanks anon for another good sighting.

Shark Craft

The Worst of Perth was recently bemoaning the state of coat hanger wire craft in Perth. We claimed the art of coat hanger wire bending for car aerials had been lost by local artisans. Not so. Not so. Embleton.

Gaetopia

Pebble studded concrete and brick can be found all over Perth in many poor buildings of the 60’s and 70’s. This combination on Main Street Balcatta is somewhat arresting though. And then there’s the name. At least it wasn’t Gaetopia.

The Colour of Money

Tom Thrett recently left some comments on the worst churches, saying he’d seen much worse, particularly St Cecilia’s in Floreat, Yokine Baptist, and Yokine Anglican. I visited them all Tom. The Yokine ones are pretty bad (we’ll see them later), but I didn’t see St Cecilia’s as a travesty of design. I can see why some might have it in their worst list, but I didn’t mind it. This is the one you meant right Tom?

This thing out the front was a little odd though, but no matter where they are in the world, all Perth expats would instantly recognise the colour on the base. It should be the official colour of the city – bore water brown. Do other cities have this discolouration, or is it unique to us?

The church itself though was quite interesting in a 60’s sort of way.

The North Face

There have been several postings recently where the worst value has been in dispute. I doubt there will be much support for this one. (Although I have been surprised before). Another from that golden mile of worst, Morley Drive Morley. The postie establishes a base camp half way up the north face, before pushing on to the summit. I don’t think we’ll find a worse letterbox. In the meantime, this can go into worst of the worst.

Palmed Off

Now I’m all for getting rid of ridiculous palm trees from gardens, but you’ve got to finish the job. This seems to have been left as an example to other palm trees to not think about setting up here in Bayswater. Looks worse than the original tree. Reminds me a little of the cocos crucifix place.

Tram Sham

Most Perth people feel a pang of embarrassment as they see this fake tram go by. Perhaps it’s because we scrapped our real trams many years ago. I think it would really impress a Melbourne vistor, our one fake tram. Unfortunately I have even seen a wedding happening on board.
