South West Metal

Guest: The Stig. Guest Area: Bridgetown.

Feeling that our public art efforts are going well in the city, with The Worst of Perth putting the Lord Mayor and ex Minister at odds over the removal of a public sculpture, we can afford to look at public art further afield. Here’s a shot from The Stig of a sculpture in Bridgetown in the southwest. Personally I appreciate the effort on this one, but I don’t like the result. What do you think?

Tray Bien

Regarding our discussion of Council House, Anonymous Perthon submitted this, also wondering just how people must have felt about the building when it was new. Anon, I’m glad I don’t know where you live, because I would have to kill you for this tray. Should have a few glasses of Weaver & Lock lemonade on it.

Savage Bliss

Guest: David Cohen from Rottobloggo.

David says…

Can I suggest a new category: Worst Condom Machine? I’ve attached a pic of one at the main pub on Rotto. I blogged about this more than a year ago, but I’m sure it hasn’t been fixed.
Regards,
David Cohen

condom

Thanks David. When I was in the UK I saw, I tell no lie, curry and rice flavoured condoms advertised on a pub machine. I suppose you could also ask the chemist for a pack of chicken tikka masala, designed for her pleasure, or the vindaloo rough riders.

Sculpture bites back!

Just when we thought The Worst of Perth had engineered the removal of the rotting arse and boozie sculpture outside Perth Station, Ex Court Government minister Max Evans leapt to the defence in The West Australian’s Inside Cover this morning. The Worst of Perth looks forward to Max defying Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi and chaining himself to one of the backsides as the crane tries to drag off the sculpture. Max even questioned what TWOP had done for the youth of Perth. No-one is more youth compliant than The Worst of Perth Max. Some of us even were youths in the past. Also included, Monday’s Inside Cover piece.

Eaves Thieves

Is there a type of house less suited to the Perth climate than these eaveless wonders popping up every day? Forces you to have the aircon on all the time, as well as being ugly. Saint James.

There are some upmarket versions in the Subiaco redevelopment as below. What a disappointment that tuned out to be. Apparently the massed airconditioners create a microclimate of hot air in the area. Who’s idea was it to have unshaded west facing windows? Now the markets are going, to really help kill off that area. What a waste of opportunity.

Two Worsts, One Stone

I have to say that I love council House now that it has been restored, but it does come up often in Worst of Perth suggestions. Like the East Perth Station, it seems to be a love it or hate it thing.

The shishkebab sculpture next to it may be less controversially dubbed worst. It was always an object of derision, probably deservedly so. It features a drill bit piercing the different types of minerals being mined in the state. The plaque lists the tons of resources. If it hadn’t been such an obvious mining promo, it might have been better liked. It was made by Paul Ritter, who was Perth’s first town planner in 1965.

Meat and Potatoes

Worst of Perth Classic

I don’t know if these places are still there in South Fremantle. Holiday homes sort of between The Potato Marketing Board and Robb’s Jetty abbatoir. I took this in I think around 1985. An unlikely holiday destination. If they are still there, let me know. The abbatoir is long closed right?

Note: They look far far better now than in 1985. With the abattoir closed, maybe worth a holiday, if cancun booked up.

Safeway Autos

Beaufort Street. Good or Bad? A nice piece of history nonetheless after it goes. This sign won’t last much longer I don’t think. Update: The consensus seems to be that this is good. Tagged “not worst”.

The Worst of Perth 1, Public Art 0

The Worst of Perth won its first public art scalp this week, as the new Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi confirmed she will be having the infamous arse and boozie sculpture removed from the front of Perth railway station after seeing the piece featured on The Worst of Perth. Quoted in The West Australian’s Inside cover, Mrs Scaffidi confirmed that she would be taking action against the sculpture and said that after seeing the it on The Worst of Perth blog, her first thought was “How embarrassing…”

Mrs Scaffidi went on to say that the sculpture was originally meant to be moved to Gomboc Gallery in 2003, and that, she assumed that the gallery would have no objections to still taking it.

I’ll see if we can have The Convention centre removed next.
