A Glimpse of The Dutchman

I don’t know if there is another explanation for this apparition. I can only think it was a glimpse of The Dutchman. Someone may be able to correct me. Is it an ad or artwork? Had to take this while driving.

“The Flying Dutchman is usually spotted from afar, sometimes seen to be glowing with ghostly light. It is said that if she is hailed by another ship, her crew will often try to send messages to land or to people long since dead. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship is reckoned by seafarers to be a portent of doom.”

Well we were in Rockingham. Cries from the ghostly crew were “Tell Mark McGowan I voted for him!”, “If only I could be in Centrepoint Midland!” and “Aaaaaaar ya swab. Doomed ye be to live in Rockingham. Aaaaar!”

Dead Letter Office

I don’t know whether to put this submission from Mr XY into worst reversing, or worst bricklaying, but since this is Curtin University, it’s probably a major artwork. Thanks XY.

Bunker on Gallipoli

Another great location for TWOP headquarters, these small offices on Gallipoli Street Lathlain. I can see myself sitting one of those vinyl chairs with a rotary dial phone, sending out a fleet of Holden HQ’s (3 on the tree) to Rockingham, Morley, Kalamunda, Rockingham…

Busty Big Cat

Munted snapped these in Wanneroo. Personally I prefer the top half of a lion combined with the bottom half of a woman. Or the left half of a woman, with the right side of a big cat, but that’s just personal taste. I also don’t think the wings are strong enough to lift those norks off the podium. Waldecks are saying they know gardens best. I say Cobras.

Thanks Munted.

The Player

Reading Flynn’s comment today, I thought, “A thousand or two visitors every day, lots of coverage on the radio and in the papers. Plenty of comments from those passionate about the city. Perhaps it’s time for The Worst of Perth to do an interview?”

Tell me what you want to ask, and I’ll do it. Is it Alannah on transport or development? Is it Troy on what the Libs have in mind for the foreshore? Is it an artist or a builder? Is it a council on it’s building policy? Send me your questions, and I will contact them for the answers.

Now, I don’t want to renounce my smartarse er, roots and of course I encourage the usual humorous badinage, but I do also want to have some serious questions I can ask them as well.

Castle Numbskull

From Guest Juffy. There are houses without eaves, and then there are houses without eaves.

Juffy says

Found this place hidden in an estate on the banks of Herdsman Lake while out for a run – may have had trouble breathing for a while afterwards. Clearly someone who thinks the Red Castle Motel is an underappreciated tour de force of architectural brilliance…? :) The whole estate is a study in one-upmanship, ostentatious rendered mansions as far as the eye can see….and then there’s this one…

This would be The Squire’s place. Normally I’m against running, but I’m glad you did this time. Juffy, I’m actually starting to like The Red Castle a lot now. I’m falling victim to my own blog, looking at the city more closely. I would be sorry to see it go.

Vyno-topia

Yes, they still exist, but usually not in such spectacular colours. There seems to be a manufacturing flaw. Shouldn’t the vinyl be split with foam poking out? These are in the best condition I have seen – and the purple! Magnificent! Seen at Edith Cowan University Mt Lawley. How many eminent academic backs have been stuck to that vinyl on hot sweaty Perth summer days?

Palmyra Pan

Something really inspired me about this shot from South of The River Russell.

Russell says,

this figure has been sitting in this guy’s yard, just up the street from me, for years, along with the unfinished boat – is it good enough for the Mundaring Sculpture Park?

I had in mind some quite sarcastic comments for this, but no. Somehow this is what’s good about Perth as well as what’s bad. Here you don’t just dream of building a boat or fashioning a sculpture of Pan, you have a crack. What the f*ck – Have a go at both at the same time. I’d like to think that I had the triumph of will to wander out the back of TWOP headquarters with a tinny of Swan premium, start laying a keel and at the same time chisel out a pagan deity. Big respect. Although I am putting this in worst art, I am also putting it in not worst. Bad boat, bad Pan. I kinda like you both. This IS what Perth is about. Thanks Russell.

Triple J

If you are already sick of the saturation coverage of The Worst of Perth in the press, and on the airwaves, DON’T listen to Triple J Dools and Linda this afternoon. I’m almost sick of hearing and reading about myself- er, myself. The interview is at 4:40pm Eastern time, and delayed for WA at the same time.

Long Lens on Yagan

You have to feel sorry for Yagan’s statue, almost as much as for the fellow himself. Famously the statue suffered decapitations twice. I don’t think the reasons were really discovered, or the severed heads and, as far as I know, the head choppers were never caught. Oddly the best view of the crimes would have been from Police Headquarters. The artist recreated the heads, but they changed a little each time. There were complaints at the time that the last one looked a lot like Ridge Forrester from The Bold and the Beautiful. This part of Heirisson Island is now fenced off, and I don’t think you can access Yagan with an angle grinder anymore. Just a continuation of the sad story of the bloke. This is as close as I could get from across the river. If the decapitator is out there, how about a shot of just one of the chopped heads? Please. You sound like a TWOP reader to me. According to the wikipaedia entry, the real head of Yagan, remains unburied too. A little birdy sent me a pic of Yagan with his original head with a couple of unknown young punks. No wonder they fenced him off. I finally got my chance to pixellate some faces too.
