Weekend Worstoff 78

This month is easily going to be the biggest ever, even topping September which had the famous B&S post. Thanks to Tim Winton for making it possible.

Jennifer S was so impressed with my interview in Pelican, UWA’s student newspaper, that she grabbed her polaroid and rushed to the toilets in the education building. First Jenn, the polaroid. I’m lovin’ it. Second, is it true that UWA toilets have ivy growing on them? I know that UWA gets more Aussie country students than Curtin, so maybe detailed toileting instructions ARE required. They might need to add some instructions on pant removal too. Also, more than 3 shakes is a wank.

Curious sent me a picture of a Curtin toilet the other day, which hasn’t appeared, but there was apparently no need for this level of instruction in a Curtin U toilet apart from the traditional “pull here and tear off for Edith Cowan degree”.  Extraordinary. uwatoiletuwatoilet2

The March of the Wa-Wa’s

The much maligned Richarbl, scion of conservative thought, (I’ve never written scion before, so I thought ‘d throw it in,) was seemingly the only one to notice the vibrancy based Future Perthing on page 56 of yesterday’s West (21/10/09). Richarbl writes…

I refer to the article in todays West P56 which outlines a vision for Barrack St to become a “vibrant arty boulevard”.

Government Architect, Steve Woodland goes on to say, ” It is likely to  adorned with major artworks and sculptures, making it a grand walk  with a mix of culture and history. That would transform it from being a pretty sad street at the moment into something which is a really fascinating and interesting journey”

I have heard similar claims  from other visionaries such as the  Wodonga City Council and here is the result. Surprisingly it is still known as Stanley St but locally it is referred to…. and with more than a nod to the mostly female  contingent that approved it…. An Exhibition of Pubic Hair.

Thanks Richarbl. I thought the ideas for Barrack Street sounded great, but as we have seen before (ie Subiaco) the gap between good ideas and what gets done in Perth is large. Whatever the good intentions, we all know that Barrack Street will end up with a march of The Wa-Wa’s as has been foisted on Wodonga. wawas

Paracleet snapped this car in Victoria Park. I like that even a crackpot car painter can use an apostrophe, unlike Yokine IGA, as visioned by Slanderer. Slanderer also snapped this baffling graphic on the store. I’m sure they’d tell you to stop that if you did that in the store. Man to Man Menswear

Why the hell does The West continue to run its crappy racing liftout? My theory is that the paper would feel embarassingly thin if it wasn’t padded out with Doomben dogs. Woogle it, it’s true. However I do have a lazy grand on Little Slapper in the Man to Man Menswear with Mr Sandals for a place.

I just saw someone go past with a pile of the latest Western Toerag aka Curtin’s The Western Independent. Entertainingly had a student journo pontificating on journalistic ethics compared to bloggers. (yawn). Also entertainingly had Media and Arts Alliance cadre David Fucking Outrage Cohen defending The West’s cross promotion with Channel 7, by pointing out that they had done a story on Dixie Marshall. Well that’s OK then. The copy is still warm and it’s already slagged off here. Grok is out too.  I feel I should be checking out “Creative Corner” (I tell no lie, they actually have a section called Creative Corner FFS) but haven’t got the stomach for it at the moment. Woogle

We haven’t had The West featured for a while. Paul Murray, while generally bad hasn’t really plumbed his old depths of risibility. Pam Casselllas still seems to be scribbling away despite my contact telling me she’s leaving. Inside Cover plods along as ever. I’ve had half a mind to comment that the paper seems, well terminally dull, but didn’t really seem worth it, not when all the real action was going on here at TWOP, so who cared? The Armstrong dismissal  removed a lot of the stupidity but has left the old rag fairly limp, a little like McMurphy after his lobotomy in Cuckoo’s Nest. I did however like this screen grab from a worker of The West’s internal search and info page Woogle. Click the pic for larger version.

And a nice typo from Crikey the other day. The Murdoch Empire now wees itself… I’m sure it’s pooing itself at the moment too.
