On a pedestal

Lucky Star captured this poorly conceived and poorly implemented homage to dead trees at The Raffles Hotel. Seriously, why bother? I hope this was done for free.

Looks like a speed camera with a tree on the stand, why didnt they just leave the tree alone.

  2. Bento says:

Traditional City of Melville v City of South Perth rivalry. Melvile saw these and had to get their own monument to dead trees mounted on excessive concrete base.

Those are vile Bento. Definite worst as well. If they didn’t have wiggly bits for branches on top and crappy artwork on the sides they’d look like grave stones. The fish in the first look like pregnant guppies, and I think the uni students might have been having a joke with design on the bottom part of the other two – looks like a vag has been incorporated into the river or whatever it’s supposed to be. Or perhaps that’s just my dirty mind…

It’s even more horrible in person. I couldn’t stop staring at it. Even alcohol didn’t make it look better. It looks like someone stuck a bit of dead branch in a block of concrete, then stuck up on metal poles inspired by a Tim Burton film. A massive fail. A definite worst.

    Public Art

    Our urban environment
    So much more vibrant
With addition of palms so smart

    Once sated on those
    There’s the emperor’s new clothes
In the guise of public art

    A nice bronze here
    Some limestone there
    Sure to enhance our clime

    “But the weather’s enough;
    No need for that guff!”
    I hear the naysayers opine

“But we need some more whacky!
    A push toward synarchy!”
    Reply winners of government grants

    Though they may be right
    Their efforts too blight
And are sure to put sand in your pants

    So take all your twigs
    And your Spiegeltent gigs
    And painted milk-crates too

    Crash them together
    In search of an answer
Or sit back and let culture accrue

Are you sure it’s a homage to dead trees and not to dead high jumpers? The tree atop the 3 high jump bars represents the dead jumpers’ inability to clear the bar ever again.*

*unless they put sunglasses on their corpses and hook up some sort of hydraulics, hilarity then ensuing.

How dare you heathens slag off this art piece, oh sure it’s all good and dandy when it’s part of the Beach art show and you’re all admiring it with a Chardonnay in hand, but did any of you ever pay a thought to what happens after the shows over, well did you?

They need homes too you know

    tree....I think

The Raffles Hotel – another Multiplex turd dumped on the Perth landscape. Hopefully they will complete the Westfieldisation of Claremont and f**k off back to the Eastern States never to be seen again. At least they were denied the opportunity to bend over the Cottesloe beachfront on the Cott Hotel site.

OT – it’s official. Ben Elton is an un-funny cunt. Not that it was really ever in doubt.

The thing I like most about this is that it appears to be somehow wearing a blood-soaked diaper.

  9. Fiona of Mount Lawley says:

I remember seeing this object displayed at “Sculptures by the Sea” three or four years ago

  10. Mez says:

purchased by the Mayor of Melville btw
