Seen on The Scarborough Beach road. By PJW. I’m liking these enigmatic worsts lately. PJW says, “Looks like Dorothy survived the Wicked Witch but not the Morris Place Shopping Centre.” You know it.

Greetings from New York City, Manhatta(e)n, to be precise. Am loving the site, as I have an interest in Australian architecture and its development vis-a-vis colonial architecture elsewhere. Perth thus far suggests a version of San Diego minus the proximity to Mexico, which was always the best and funniest part.
Briefly thought of starting a website called “The Worst of New York” but realized that a map of Bay Ridge already exists.
LikeLike
That’s perhaps a fair comparison. But where San Diego has Mexico, we have the endless hilarity of, erm, Northam? Wagin? Moora?
Do you dream that one day New York may be a cosmopolitan world city, like Subiaco?

US rurotards amazingly may be more ‘tarded than our own from all reports.
LikeLike
It’s a bit of an apples and oranges thing, I think.
The ruros featured here seem to being trying, more or less cheerfully, to keep up appearances.
There is little midway point in the US hinterlands between Martha Stewart Stepfordville and the Texas Chainlink Massacre.

Our rurotards, despite all their failings, tend not to be Jesus jockeys. From what we see here, that tends not to be the case over there? Outside Manhattan, isn’t everyone some kind of religious nutcase?
LikeLike
Not quite.
“Nutcase,” yes, but that’s as true this side of the bridges as not.
Vast swathes of American suburbia are actually quite elegant in a “drop-a-piece-of-litter-and-trained-dogs-will-kill-you” sort of way.
LikeLike
For us, rurotards begin on the utskirts of the city and beyond. Suburban would just be normal morons.
LikeLike
If I am not mistaken, the rural areas adjacent to Perth are both less settled and perhaps more drought-prone than those near New York City?
The rural areas here can include some districts of comparative age and shocking wealth. Which is perhaps more attractive from an aesthetic standpoint but ups the get-awf-our-land quotient a tad.

Also, it seems that suburbs in Australia sometimes refer to what we would consider inner-city neighborhoods full of brownstones and drive-bys and whatnot. Not, I expect, that Perth is overly troubled by either.

Hi TTBSOAM, some of this site have enjoyed the work of Dan Savage. He sums up the USA rurotard voter nicely.

I dream that one day portions of this Gotham City nightmare may attain the grace and beauty of the fair district of Subiaco. Mostly the bit where my landlord lives.
Am burning with curiosity to know what you thought of Savannah. Not a city very high on Australia’s radar, I would imagine. I think it’s quite lovely but am aware that there must be troves of worsts lurking around the historic squares.
LikeLike
Savannah was magnificent. I must have taken about 300 photos.
An undeniable worst was the tavern which was previously used by pirates and smugglers, even having a secret underground tunnel, and has been renovated to resemble an early 1990s Holiday Inn Express. Bartender couldn’t even make me a mint julep. Outrage.
And of course the shameless Midnight references, which is comparable to the ubiquity of swan crap over here.

I think I have a Hudson River Valley “worst” you might enjoy.
Pirates, colonial manison (1720), Presidential wedding, ballroom by a famous architect–yet the basement is full of pirate statues and the bar custom runs to the roughest lot in town.
LikeLike
Pirate statues in the basement, you say? Check the bottom. If it says ‘Smith’, dump it in the Hudson, before it spreads.
