Was suggested we have an open post for Saturdays.  One topic. Why won’t people stop saying “Baby Gammy”?

And regarding the Peppermint Grove post the other day, J H pointed me towards the excellent Peppy Grove Wanker. Also Peppy Grove wankering slightly differently on Twitter if you prefer. Which you would if you lived south of the river I guess.

    Rant warning.

    Why is the West so bad? It could have been so different. The late Andre Malan, one of the more decent srcibblers here, promoted an Indian Ocean Rim identity for Perth, while trying to resolve the layers of his own identity and African past. Later, when Clough still owned the paper, they put some effort into an Asia focus but drowned by a general loss of interest in the wake of the Asian financial crisis, and big egos in a small frogpond, the best left. They lagged on digital and when they finally got around to it, did it badly and still do. They can’t even break the big stories from their own State.

    WAs economic rise and contribution to the Federation should have seen the West become a go-to paper for the political and business elites of Asia and the Indian Ocean. Why has it gone backwards, why is it just so bad?

    Do it Twiggy, now. Or it’ll never happen.

        The guy’s got Asia vision, is serious enough about his anti slavery campaign to get the Pope’s blessing in person, has biggest mobs of money and likes making more. And he knows he can’t take it with him. The West is an institution that shapes opinions, writer and reader stuck in a feedback loop of worsts – after 2 decades overseas I just can’t believe a city this size still has such a cringeingly bad paper. Let him remake the institution as a legacy and gift to the State. Pay it forward. He’s got ideas, let him push them with a paper. So all papers have ‘proprietorial issues’ and Clough had his too. I reckon the Twigster must be as fed up with the West as the rest of us. Anyway jes dreamin’, Twig gathers a team of the best journos with vision, tells them to look outwards not inwards, gives them proper financial and legal support for investigative stuff, gets them outta Osborne Park and back into the City where they have the time to develop networks not rewrite press releases, tasks them to make the West into the go-to paper of choice for Asia and Indian Ocean rim business elites in keeping with WAs economic and strategic clout, and let it rip. Of course, it could be even worse than what we’ve got now. Jes dreamin’. end of rant.

    Flashback to when the Lib gov of the day tried to hang Dr.Maurice Benn, Prof of German at UWA, for the ‘mercy’ killing of his severely affected Down’s Syndrome child, to protect his wife going round the twist back when there wasn’t the support parents now have.
