I was curious why the high-speed chase death made the front page of Teh West today, but the hotel window death was hidden away in a corner on page 14.
similarly the national TV news picked up on the chase story this morning, but nobody seems interested in why the guy in the hotel was tasered and beanbagged and then just ‘stepped out’ of a window which was very small and had a very high sill.
Were the ninja guys with machine guns really required for a bloke setting light to his doona? Is there any investigative journalism going on in this town?

I can’t find the quote, but recall reading something along the lines of:
“As a journalist, you can tirelessly investigate the causes, motivations, and implications of events and decisions, or you can transcribe whatever people tell you. You’ll find both pay about the same.”

I count one , killed in the controversial pursuit. All states, except two, have a policy of pursuit in certain circumstance. To quote Klag from Perth Now :
“My guess is what they were trying to do was get that authorisation, but you can’t wait for someone to take off and then wait for three or four minutes for that authorisation,” he said.
“So typically they call for urgent assistance, and it was only a matter of a minute between them calling for that assistance and them calling for an ambulance.”
Th other death appears to be suicide , but you’d really have to wait for the coroner’s report.

i think the word they are searching for is approval. not authorisation.

Either way, Karlo’s saying that 100% of the time a pursuit is unapproved/ unauthorised at the time it starts. So approval/ authorization is always retrospective for all or part of the pursuit. This is somehow cured by subsequent approval/ authorisation. Conceptually a bad fit and wide open to stretching the timeframe.
Meanwhile car on fire today after police pursuit. Nobody died but that is surely just luck. Can’t see why car theft is so objectively bad it warrants such a risky approach; insurance pretty much deals with the financial consequences.

Not necessarily. I’m no fan of high speed chases, but I think its a bit unfair to imply that there is some sort of dishonesty or cover-up happening, in the absence of any supporting evidence.
