Some examples of the built environment. Haven’t had many buildings lately. House by Tristan H. Greenwood. Magnificent. Another portal to next dimension job.

This picture removed on request. Agreed in the circumstances.

Bento sent this more for the spelling, but I like the building. While Barkeeping Manhatten sends shots of ruined mansions and Shining style hotels from new York, here’s what we have to offer in return.Kensington Squash Courts by Matt B. I have taken shots of this myself. I like the equally tatty perth squash headquarters down the road next to Metro Inn. And Anna C sent in a whole lot of arches of Perth, including this marvellous not worst from Clarement Showgrounds.

The top pic leads me to think this family went to Bali, saw all the beautiful wooden door shops just outside Kuta, had to have one, but once home had no idea, being bogans, what to do with them. Fail, as the kids say.

The Hilton squash courts are also woeful, and that’s post renovation.

As for the arches. That’s where the El Caballo Blanco nags were displayed during the Royal Show, thus the architecture.

    • Snuff says:

Well spotted, Shaz, which makes the arches doubly not worst.

That is one seriously registered lawn, and it’s a pity the hippies didn’t go with Satyrday.

  2. Bento says:

A sport that reached the height of its popularity in the 70s, and was played in a cubic structure, was always going to be an architectural disaster in this city.

    Re second pic: Nymboida NSW?

  4. Grrr says:

That crystal shoppe used to be in Maylands, and I am sure it was previously featured here some time ago (that, or the new age business is booming and needs an outlet store). Of course I’m sure that the closed Morley squash courts have been featured and I can’t seem to find them so I may be wrong.

I love the font on the Kensington courts. So ’70s. Does anyone know what it is called?

The plastic chairs hint at, perhaps, a rain-filled ashtray on the ground, and perhaps a half-drunk stubby of VB. It’s almost poetic.

    • Lucky Star says:

I remember the Morley squash courts. My other half used to play there about four years ago. I went down to watch him play a few times. Shabbiest courts ever. Not surprisingly when the guys saw the nicely renovated courts at Mirrabooka they jumped ship – about the only good thing we’ve found about Mirrabooka.

    • Hovean says:

Ashtrays at the squash courts – also so very ’70s.

      • Natalia Fan #1 says:

Handy for ducking out to have a mid-match Swan Gold while puffing on a B&H. Seem to remember a Swan Gold TV ad involving squash circa early 80s.

    • BrownBook says:

I second the love of that font. Also

    • WA_side says:

They’d have to have brought the VB with them, it was a steep walk from the squash courts up to the old Flying Pig back in the day, but the nearest watering hole is far removed these days.

I wonder at crime stats in Kensington now, that alarm looks old and rusty enough to be non-functioning. Perhaps even the crims have enough sense to not break in?

    • Bag O'Turnips says:

The font appears to be known as Decorated 035.

Very widely used for the names for blocks of flats built around 1969-1975; you know, the dodgy one and two bedroom complexes so beloved by less-than savoury types. A very typically masculine font in true 70s style: I can just picture a heavy-set bloke with a serious cookie duster under his nose with equally serious muttonchops, a safari suit with a soft pack of Rothmans (that’s the only thing soft ’bout him!) and standing next to his pride & joy, an olive Chrysler VH Charger XL. And this would be his font.

As seen also here at Dunvegan.

  5. Bento says:

And they’ve registered the fuck out of that lawn.

  6. Lucky Star says:

The first one just makes me think, “Harry Potter and the Magical Door to Failure”. Very poorly executed. On the other side is a cashed up, 12 toed, two headed bogan who thinks it looks “f**ken awesome maaaate!”

The last one, I feel like the Queen of Hearts should come strutting through with a pack of Spades cards in tow.

The squash courts look pretty depressing. Dismal even. Seems to be a theme with squash courts. There were some down the road from me on Wanneroo Road that looked just as dismal until they pulled them down recently. Half the letters on the wall were missing from the word “SQUASH” or badly damaged for ages.

I like lemon squash its gaint taste but whats with the wired Stones drink?

  8. pete says:

Robbie Johnson will be knocking that door down under the anti-fortification laws now.

  9. JaneZ says:

The squashed courts are lovely. Reminds me of the fantastic blue School of Dance and associated expanse of ramp and carpark near the corner of McMillan St and Albany Highway that I just wouldnt be able to do photographic justice to.

Nymboida is great too, right next door to a good menacing Chinese restaurant/crack house, IIRC.

  10. orbea says:

for shame, the greenwood portal has been censored, along with electrified trampoline

    • Hovean says:

On seeing the Greenwood portal was censored, I shot down to Nymboida to get something that would aid me in viewing it from the other side. The beads they gave me were a bit squashed and didn’t work so well.

  11. WAtching says:

    Cicumstances? What Circumstances?

    • Natalia Fan #1 says:

Been out all day; was looking forward to gazing on the Greenwood portal once more – circumstances indeed.

      • WAtching says:

I still have no idea why the picture needed to be removed.

Censorship. TLA wearing a shawl. End times are upon us. Wish I hadn’t done that deal with Dazza now. Sheesh.

  12. The Legend 101 says:

Is that a buisness a buisness place or a house? and where is Greenwood

  13. The Legend 101 says:

Big announcement: Watching is no longer Dr Phil he is a annoying call centre person.

  14. orbea says:

    whats with the foodpress link?
TLA going for worst advertising now that he cant smoke on campus?

  15. Snuff says:

Bullseye ! Just had a massive 6+ earthquake smack bang under my town.

Still got power, still in one piece. Reports of my demise only slightly exaggerated.

    What a wild ride !
