Can this be the tipping point of the city’s culture? The moment when a Perth music fan said, “Enough! I’m as crap as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!” Casting their Travelling Wilburys Volume 1&2 with bonus DVD out of the window of their new lime green ute on Great Eastern Highway, they reverse over it a number of times and perform one more burnout on the way to see The Royal Philharmonic at The Concert Hall.

Years ago – 1985 to be precise – I bought the live album Who’s Last at 78’s in Hay Street. I was a huge Who fan, still am, but after I got back to my grey brick bunker* in Stanley Street Scarborough I was so effing disgusted at how bad it was that I jumped in my car, drove down West Coast Highway, and tossed it from the car window frisbee style into the dunes at the end of Ventnor Street.
* Just getting into the spirit of TWOP.

It’s hard to think how you could lose it from a car unless you threw it out deliberately.

I like it, but I have another scenario.
When someone stole my red 1980 Celica hatchback (sob) in 2001, they made an extra style statement by chucking out selected CD’s.
I’m happy to say I’ve never owned the Wilburys vol Anything, or bonus DVD’s but I did find my Carpenters and Tom Petty cassettes on the verge. They kept Radiohead, the Lemonheads and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and other things.
Maybe we have a serial car thief who hates Tom Petty… but he hates Jeff Lynn even more, hence driving over the cd’s instead of just putting them on the verge.
Tony are we to understand that you frisbeed an actual 33rpm out of a moving vehicle? It’s lucky nobody was hurt….

I mean selected tapes. Cassettes.

I almost miss that massive hiss of a cassette before the music began on car stereos.

And I also miss the long lengths of tape from tossed cassettes that’d get wrapped around signposts on the side of the road or a traffic island, dragging their tangled and unspooled lengths forlornly to the wind…you don’t see much of that anymore!

No, cassettes were truly a crap medium.

Not if you had a decent car stereo with Dolby (which mitigated the analogue hiss of tape) and used Metal/Type IV cassettes to make your mixtape upon. So my experiences were fine, only because I was discerning about my car audio choices, even nearly 20 years ago, despite having dungers as my early cars…but I’ve never got into the whole doof-doof thing, even if the sound system was nearly worth more than my car.
Alas though, I don’t really miss them…it’s good to have iPod control from the car’s head unit, which even renders Compact Discs as obsolete.

Wow.. um, you missed the best pun! You just lost some comedic points ;)
“End of the LINE” would’ve landed you comedic genius as the Wilburys’ had a song called “end of the line”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_of_the_Line_(The_Traveling_Wilburys_song)
I like the wilburys’ there music was chilled out and laid back and my Dad listened to them a bit when i was a kid and i really got into what little music they made as a group.
Each of them all great musicians in their own right, coming together to produce even better music, can’t go wrong. Go on, start flaming me for being 25 and loving music that came out when i was 6.

LA, I think you’d better tell Greg the location of this CD so he can go get it and repair it

Has been surprisingly little comment on comment agro. Hey, i know someone your age who likes Toto Greg. Perhaps it was a reference to end of the line with road substituted because the discs were on the road?

I think data recovery will be a little difficult. It has degenerated further over the last couple of days. I made a point of driving over it again on Monday. It’s a few steps from the Rivervale Hotel.

Sony still sells cassette walkmans at extortionate prices for tomthretts kind.
Gee the wilburys were awful. You can just hear them sitting down as they strum their compressed guitars and moog their harmonys or whatever they did to make that ghastly geriatric sound.
But Greg just a note, being 25 & liking music that came out when you were 6 is quite all right. On the other hand if you were 25 when the wilburys appeared and you liked them then, now that is offensive and wrong.
I mean, I still like Abba; but when I was 6 I DID NOT trust adults who liked them. I thought the adults in the audience at the entertainment centre were downright weird. Adults were supposed to like Fleetwood Mac, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Jethro Tull etc.

When I was 6 it was Bowie, T-Rex and Bob Marley & The Wailers. Lucky, really. Then again, on the debit side there was the Bay City Rollers, The Osmonds and Leo fucking Sayer…

I’ve heard he is still dead. Which means I’m sure he will be playing at the entertainment centre one of these days. Has that been torn down yet?
