Turkish jails are worse. Prison libraries have been stocked with wintons, possibly by writers without borders. So pervasive is the Winton influence that the wintonism ‘Marron glance’, as in to give someone a Marron glance, has spread from convict argot to the general population, though the jilgie smirk, koonac wink and crayfish stare are yet to enter Turkish prison culture.
Google however is yet to spot the trend and still refers to a Marron glance as a type of Turkish desert made from candied chestnuts.
