Further to yesterday’s post looking closely at the legacy of the Tim Winton’s of music, The Triffids. Wikipedia lists their main legacy as the inspiration for the name of a Greek band, and of course Wide Open Road is set to push out Phil Collins’ In The Air Tonight for a spot in the Skyshow stereocast (respect). But it was pointed out that they do have a more lasting legacy, the tree-house in Wisbech Street Bayswater. The locals all boast that the tree-house pictured, (mostly obscured by foliage) was built by the band. Ironically it is in the opposite of a wide open road – a narrow cul-de-sac. I hope this local legend is true. How embarrassing if it had actually been built by The Kryptonics or Love Pump. Property values plummet. No Cocos I notice.
Current owners kindly have taken a photo. Actually looks more like a drinking platform than a treehouse.

A missed opportunity for a V Capri joke. This is the true worst.

Remember when the Perth music scene was Spiny Norman, Flash Harry, The Jets, The Frames and multiple incarnations of cover band hell?
Shit.

Dick and The Dames; someone thought that was a good name for a band then.

Should have been Dick Swisher and the Dames a la Dirty Dicks, which (did I dream this?) is making a comeback.

I think Tod Johnson did some brick paving at my folks place in 1982. I can’t be sure but. Maybe it was Kenny Kidna? Who knows?

I know. What was Dad thinking? A job at the staff captured Green-Left ALPBC is like winning Lotto. You don’t resign, you marry someone who enjoys your own good fortune. Where else could a mediocre Arts graduate whose only previous employment experience was as a Guild employee end up as a senior political reporter or a mediocre lawyer end up as a $350,000 pa morning announcer? What a moron.

I’m glad you’ve brought the emptiness of the Triffids to light. Way back when I met my husband – who’s american – he was dazzled by the fact that I came from the same town as the Scientists. I felt I should play him the triffids and of course they sucked.

being unfamiliar with The Triffids Legacy, apart from the wistful Wintonesque air of sentimentality they generate in people of a certain age in Perth, I went and looked at their oevre on Youtube.
‘Wide Open Road’ features a specky bloke in a red shirt playing steel guitar.
On the video for ‘Bury me Deep’ he appears to be playing an autoharp.
they seem to take themselves very serously, with Tim-like faux-gravitas and a lot of gated snare. Did anyone else take them seriously? with an autoharp?

It is a little monotonous. I am convinced there was a violin from time to time.

Rob McComb played one. Featured in songs like Being Driven, Rosevel and Native Bride.

It’s the still being talked about decades later that the Triffids have going. I doubt Tame Impala will be remembered.

i remember the Triffids fondly i still have the sandy devotional LP and get it out for a spin on occasions of great melancholy and longing for a long gone past. it stands the test of time, it reminds me of some years ago now while coming back to Perth from Karratha for a party weekend and i had driven all night a mate sleeping in the shotgun seat and my girlfriend asleep in the back of an old Gemini playing the only cassette i had at the time over and over yes you guessed it “Sandy Devotional” we swapped drivers at GIN GIN where they shot the video for “wide open road” and my girlfriend at the time was booked for speeding
