The Hanging Gardens of Balcatta

I wanted to take the tone down from my recent rantings on Perth’s media, to take it way down, like a special breed of cat. And what better way to do so than with this lovely, desolate, classic worst shot from Humourworks’ Edward De Bozo. Since this site is of course being archived by The State Library, I can only hope that in a Balcatta 1000 000 years from now, residents looking at the history of of the suburb, will realise that although they have evolved from carbon based to silicon based life forms, that the cactus and sand garden is still there. Maybe there should be a sequel to the play Oh Calcutta titled Oh Balcatta?

Your knowledge of all things Perth is astounding. There was a production called “Oh Balcatta” put on at His Majesty’s early 1980s by the performing arts and music students from Balcatta SHS. To everyone’s disappointment no brawls occurred.

Did they go on to make the Gnangara Witch Project in the late 90’s?

Not sure, but the jagged grey bricks and black bar gates of Balcatta SHS would have made a perfect set for filming “Balcatraz”, as the school was affectionately known.

And the innate conservatism of Australian gastronomy hasn’t yet discovered the delightful eating that is the fruit of this noxious weed.

A right bugger to harvest though.

    “It’s alive.” – Outrage

Are you aware sir that that was the name of a 1974 movie directed by your namesake Larry Cohen?

I don’t know if he made It’s Alive 2, but he did direct a sequel to Salems’ Lot (starring Samuel Fuller?) and that TV thing called V- the Winged Serpent with David Carradine.

Didn’t think much of Salems’ II, but V was a hoot….

Well spotted MN. I can never remember, but Lazza is either the bastard child of my half-cousin Leonard, or the estranged nephew of my quarter-cousin Sacha Baron. None of us are related to Dr Harry.
