Pebble studded concrete and brick can be found all over Perth in many poor buildings of the 60’s and 70’s. This combination on Main Street Balcatta is somewhat arresting though. And then there’s the name. At least it wasn’t Gaetopia.

Now this is unquestionably shite…did some developer called Gaetano name it after himself? The only explanation that came to mind for such an odd name.

When I first started reading here i thought you’d run out of material after a short time. I now realise that this is extremely unlikely. Even if you do work your way through Perth’s back-catalogue of visual disasters, I’m sure they’re putting more up faster than you can photograph them.

I’ve got 3 months worth already photographed or suggested. Won’t run out for some time.

I am living in Spore and considering to migrate to Balcatta. There is a company there that I hope to land me a job.
Please tell me more about Balcatta.

Studied at Balcatta senior high in the early 80’s. A nice enough outer suburb full of sons & daughters of market gardeners & italians.
Names like Con, Mario & Nino were common along with the sights of rows of tomatoes & greens. These days most of thats gone and you have magnificent architecture as seen above.
Lots of stone carved Lions there still though – and happy hunting for a place that doesnt have at least a dozen roman columns holding up the tiled & wrought iron balcony!

Why would you ever want to leave a place called Spore?

Azfer @ 8. Stay in Spore, wherever that is (Did you leave the apostrophe out of a contraction of Singapore? Or do you inhabit the underside of a fern or fungus?). The pic above, listed as a Balcatta worst, was actually taken in Osborne Park. (The boundary between OP and Balcatta is, I believe, Karinyup Rd.) Balcatta has nothing to rival this architecturally. BCF is spot on with his stone lions, columns and balconies. The onlly shopping centre in Balcatta is the dilapidated Northlands, home of a truly horrible octagonal tavern. But if you’re visually impaired, it might be an OK place to live.
