New Museum a loveletter to Shedism

Which isn’t really a surprise. Perth’s only genuine architectural movement Shedism is referenced in myriad ways here. The shed shape, the (transparent?) corrugated iron motif on the top floor, the disdain towards location and heritage buildings. That Koolhaas has finally come out as a Shedistophile, also not surprising. The only thing it’s not is ‘bold and distinctive’.  It also has a touch of traditional Noah’s Ark representation about it, which being nautical design Shedism also not surprising. The artist impression didn’t add the logo. Now corrected.

“Lots of things are built in the Sheds of Australia……….. But who builds the sheds”, is the real question.

To be fair, this is only a design concept. No one has yet designed any real building, nor is there approval for works to start. It could get a lot worse yet.

Think Sauerbruch ; think Hutton ; think Sydney ( West Circular Quay ) ; think 2001 ; think public competition ; think fiasco ; think Sartor .

Maybe better not think Sartor .

Definitely think big beautiful light box ‘ hovering ‘ over ( not ‘ hoovering ‘ ) dark opaque historical old ugliness . Think another BBLB already a few years old atop State Theatre . A third will make a ‘ collection ‘ of them . Where will it go ?

Has Rem OMA never visited that post Olympic purposively globalised Sydney City of the mind ? Where only Danish Modern has ever been grudgingly allowed to drop anchor , disembark and procreate but not to engender anything other than warmed over Harvard Bauhaus over and over again ?

This amnesiac BBLB is just another refugee from Europe who couldn’t get a job back east . It has settled with another of its kind and will soon create a family and then a ghetto of its kind in Northbridge .

Would be even better if it were converted to a mosque, either after Bunnings sells it, or as part of a joint partnership.

Such a shame. Another case of accountants winning. Could the enormous overhang/shadowing of the heritage buildings be the most symbolic element of the whole project? Well, apart from the rampant shedism.

This would appear to beg the question as to where any good architecture is these days. The above design is a tweak or so away from Rem library in Seattle (which was actually lauded by the architectural press at large when it was completed).

john day will make a cheap and versatile exhibit and comes ready stuffed. They can put him inside the whale skeleton or stand him next to the thylacine

A stuffed john day exhibit could also stand next to the dinosaur. Because he’s versatile. And drive vintage cars in period costume. And he makes a great argument against intelligent design for those school excursions.
