Outrage Sunday 240 Alpha

The new crossfit? Yoga? No, Alpha is religion. The questions rack up: where are you going? Is there more to life than this? Why does religion think appearing like sports gear will get the punters in? No pressure, no follow up, no charge! One fondly recalls the mid-1980s in teh Pert, where you couldn’t walk from the bus to the Terrace Hotel without being accosted by some born-again who really wanted to tell you how s/he had been whacked out on teh drugs, and had loads of unmarried sex, but was saved by teh Lord. The men always looked a bit wistful when they talked about their rooting. The Orange People were more fun. Alpha even has a hash tag! “Alpha really is for anyone who’s curious”. They even have a quote from the religion-hating The Guardian: “What Alpha offers, and what is attracting thousands of people, is permission, rare in secular culture, to discuss the big questions: life and death and their meaning.” Civilisation not keeping up with modernisation?

It is a long held belief of mine that, as technology, engineering and science have moved on at ever increasing rates, the essential human psyche stubbornly retains much of its ancient behaviours.
Primitive fears, ambitions and survival instincts remain doggedly embedded in our financial, political and religious activities as well as in the petty day-to-day personal interactions within our communities.
I wonder if the human psyche can actually ever develop to a point where our activities become functionally constructive as opposed to our current predisposition toward competition and conflict.
I suspect that it will not occur within my lifetime, and I concern myself that it may not come into being before humankind has rendered this planet uninhabitable. Not that there is a lot that I can do about it, but do the little that I can.
Life, as they say, is little more than a sexually transmitted terminal condition.
