BSWAM wants to let us know what New York is currently casually demolishing – for no real reason. Jesus. Rizzoli’s Bookshop going. But they are taking the chandelier. Also a disregarded front entrance I would love to have at home.

The developer’s name is Vornado. Which rhymes with “tornado”. As in “it looks like a tornado just hit this place”.

A damn shame. It’s divine.

If this was Perth and we had such architectural splendor, the criminals masquerading as developers would have set fire to it.

Just like the Guilford Hotel only culturally significant. I bet New Yorkers didn’t have to put up with increasingly nonsensical banners and graffiti either.

Demolition permits have been issued.
On the other hand, the Manhattan Borough President is suggesting a mandated review of any building older than 50 years prior to redevelopment even if the building is not a landmark or in a historic district. Rizzoli may prove to be the Pennsylvania Station of its day in its effect on preservation in Midtown.

NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission? Surely a contradiction in terms:
Also cunts.

The Commission’s profile and role vary considerably according to what party and politician are in control of the mayor’s mansion. The LPC has been a very aggressive force in the recent past and looks to be stepping up its role again with the incoming appointee. The outgoing chair is widely regarded (unfairly or not) as an unresponsive corporate shill, but even under his reign the city’s historic districts expanded exponentially. Rizzoli appears to be a clear case of giving up and playing dead for a powerful developer, however.

Saw a program on planetarium (the rose something) there and how it was the only heritage building allowed demolished because the new one was going to be so good. Older one was better.
