Pete F. and I are in violent disagreement over the FESA building on Hay Street. “Building is not worst, given how bland much of that area is,” he says. “The likelihood of it being knocked over or swallowed by hotel is worst.” I say poppycock, and add a pic I took last week from the sixth floor of the District Court. I say not worst only if you like your buildings to be inspired by Borg cube blueprints.

Totally not Worst. Presumably The Post hates it because it is over 3 storeys. Any new hotel built there would be infinitely more boring. If you can’t make an interesting reuse of an old fire station FFS, you’re not trying very hard.
In unrelated news, has someone previously provided a link to these pics?

Give it a high pressure spay and it would once again look awesome. In the 80s fireman on the roof used to attach a wallet to fishing rod and line there, hilariously reeling it in when passerby on footpath reached for it.

Brutally not worst.
p.s. Nice link, Bento, even though HDR doesn’t grab me.

This is much less poxy than the tilt-up FIFO-box erections on Adelaide Terrace.
I like the mould. It takes real effort to grow mould in WA where nine months of the year is like living in a desiccator.

And it also comes down to the fact that the new hotel is a certainty to be shithouse.

Look at that deck. That fucker’s got small bar written all over it. Don’t tell me the ladies wouldn’t go mad for a fireman-themed small bar.

They wanted to knock down council house because it was dirty. Sheesh. Couldn’t we try cleaning these fuckers first.

there is no reason that the existing building couldn’t be part of a really innovative and unique hotel development.

It’s the two speed economy. All the cleaners have gone and got jobs on the mines. No one in Perth can afford their rates.

It looks very eastern bloc. Nicholae Ceausescu would approve.

I was in the FESA building recently and internally its very ‘yes minister’, lots of diligent folk scurrying from floor to floor performing their P2C2E.
I await BSWaM’s opinion on the building.

Byegone brutalism .
Fortunately Perth still has a few good examples left of this rollicking seventies blowout in architecture : Atrium building at King street and st George’s terrace , and east Perth train terminal .
Both are in close to original condition whereas more modest examples have recently been smothered in alpolic .
Unfortunately for a late gastarbeiterin the former FESA site is under redevelopment as a hotel tower surrounding a lift shaft with an apparent appetite for human sacrifice .
FESA itself is memorialised in a nearby American Romanesque firehouse in Murray street . Well worth a visit for its carmine-coloured cor-flute stair shaft that forms part of heritage-sensitive adaptation .
