Stupid roundabout in Geraldton

Says Orbea. Sounds like someone had to ride a bike all the way there. Into a northerly smelling of Eneabba. With bonus Vibe nightclub. And cocii.gerro

Let’s not get started on stupid roundabouts… Vic Park’s Albany Highway and Kent St intersection is the stupidest roundabout ever.

The stupidity of roundabouts is in inverse proportion to the number of years the traffic planner responsible for it, spent in university with nil life or workplace experience.
I well remember the roundabout placed at the Western end of the Peel Terrace bridge over the Avon in Northam.
Many years ago, some clever and highly educated dicks within the Northam Town Council decided that all the East West truck traffic that was currently driving through the main street of Northam (Fitzgerald St), had to be re-routed via a bypass to the North of the Northam CBD.
This was a sensible, if difficult decision.
The route chosen was straight over the Peel Terrace bridge upon entering the town area, on into Forrest St, left into Newcastle St and then right into Mitchell Ave, and head out of town.
So … 150 East-West semis would roar through this bypass every Sunday afternoon on their way to Perth, so they could unload in Perth on Monday morning.
Then the residents of Forrest St started to complain about the noise and speed of the trucks.
So the solution was devised. A roundabout at the end of the Peel Terrace bridge would provide a “traffic-calming solution” (God, how I love that term! – it means open-slather for any traffic engineer or planner to install any amount of idiocy in the form of speed bumps, roundabouts, zig-zags, or road narrowing, all designed to infuriate motorists).
So the roundabout was duly installed – at great cost.
Unfortunately, the designer of that roundabout never even remotely considered how easy or difficult it was to wheel a fully loaded semi around that nasty, tight little roundabout. Or maybe they did.
On a scale of difficulty to traverse it, it rated about a 9.5 on a scale of 10.
The truckies produced their answer and their solution. They just drove straight through the fucking PIA roundabout – with fully loaded trucks.
And I mean drove straight through it. They utterly fucking destroyed this $150,000 roundabout within weeks. They just went in a straight line off the bridge and pounded the roundabout to dust.
They council set to and removed the roundabout. They got the message.
Nowadays, of course, Northam has a fine, high-class Gt Eastern Hwy bypass that totally bypasses Northam so far to the North that you need binoculars to see the town. That’s what I call a proper traffic solution.

personally, the roundabout at the intersection of lake and james with the sculpture that inhibits vision of actual cars approaching is my pet hate.

only slightly improved by removing the cobbles.
