That depends on the perspective of the viewer as well as on the definition of “hick”.
The ‘cultural cringe’ which has existed for so long across the whole of Australia retains echos of its past in this comment.
Defining oneself, or one’s community founded on the percieved greater qualities of ‘elsewhere’, is fundamental to denegrating its uniqueness: Too often, the individual particularities which make a society function well within the circumstances of its existence are not recognised – contrarywise, they are often denegrated.
The shallow viewpoint of comments such as this, as well as its all-encompassing and arrogant assumption that the Perth metropolis comprises the whole of the State and its values, is entirely facile.
