Are all of these roadside memorials terrible? Or are they culturally important? It seems like a more private memorial would be more appropriate, especially as they begin to degenerate. I guess it might be good to note a dangerous piece of road, but most seem to be on innocuous stretches. This one by Orbea. Pinjar. Is it really what he would have wanted?

Yes it is tragic for the families, but why have they not tended this memorial? If it is too painful then this is how it will end up, tattered and neglected, and an awful statement of insensitivity.

The missus saw a ghost at one of these things a few months ago. Not funny, she shoulda had both eyes on the road, not looking at crosses. First ghost down here. She was shit scared of the dark when her mum died but only her sister saw her ghost. I sit in the corner and take notes. And put the wheelie bins out before it gets dark. I’m in trouble if she ever reads this, which she won’t.

I’ve seen a ghost crab, a ghost town, a ghost train and even watched The Ghost Rider. But I’ve never seen a ghost. It’s as if they just don’t exist. ( for the record, in my line of work I’ve have, at very close quarters, watched around 250-300 people die) not one ghost. Or even a Thankyou.
