Quay Meh

I’m in the Australian today slagging off Meh Quay. Although my main point, that the worst part of it was the ditching of the indigenous art centre was not in. Image links to whole story. My whole submission was, “One of the best things about the incredible transformation of Perth in the last seven or eight years is that the utter disappointment of Elizabeth Quay is now not relevant. The city is bursting with life everywhere else. Nobody would care if EQ slipped under the jellyfish infested wavelets of the Swan. Premier Barnett’s “Prince Philip moment” in naming the thing after the monarch won’t matter. That the major artistic statement –  Christian de Vietri’s sculpture, Spanda is a standard Perth yawn, (although I do like the penguin) will make no difference. It even doesn’t really matter that the main commercial tenants have pulled out. The only real tragedy is that an iconic indigenous art/interpretation centre was ditched early on. That could have pulled the focus of the city down to the river. Now, what would be the point of going there?”aust

How to get a development proposal accepted: A) Hint at affordable housing. B) Mention something about Aboriginal people, and connecting it with the arts is always a winner. C) Use of the word “vibrant”. Once the proposal has been approved you can forget about A and B, but bang on about vibrancy as you move forward, together, as a team!

Ask any tourist where they went or where they wanna go. Kings Park. NY has the Lady representing foundational values. It actually means something to them, those values live in the community. The KP War Memorial is nowhere near as ambitious and it’s a simple vision ie what you see is what you get, it’s a nice view over the river, and btw let’s not forget the big wars where we lost family. At least it’s authentic. And everyone who’s ever visited Perth knows it.

The EQ indig bird statue is derivative crap. I’ve seen almost identical syncretic designs across the north, East Indonesia and Melanesia, boat and bird representing the first Christian Missionaries, the bird with outstretched pinions usually being a Pelican, sometimes representing Christ. The money wasted on EQ was ripped outta the Pilbara and it’s indig peoples to subsidise the fantasies and lifestyles of Perth. It should’ve been used to develop the Pilbara.

I went to EQ on Saturday night. I had booked tickets for the Spiegeltent and thought it was by the river, but I had made a crucial error. It turns out there are several fringe tents, all with chirpy names and I was standing outside the wrong one.
The quay was crowded with suburban people who looked like they didn’t come into the city except when there were fireworks and/or stabbings. They were all walking around aimlessly wondering why they had been mysteriously drawn to a small rectangle of stagnant water, like wildebeest standing by the waterhole waiting for the crocodiles to strike.
Realising my error I hastily rushed across to Fringeworld in Northbridge and that place had vibrancy up the wazzoo.
So the moral is: stagnant water and second-rate public art and a few pissweak fountains do not create vibrancy. Art and theatre and bawdy cabaret and outdoor drinking create vibrancy. Not jugglers, though.
So spend some money on actual artists and performers rather than bare concrete and corporate public art. Don’t pretend that EQ is anything more than a land grab by developers funded by the taxpayer. And let people get drunk outdoors in a safe environment with a low risk of stabbing.

    I lost my thread there.

‘ Vibrancy up the wazoo ‘ … How v graphic ! Does no one do it the natural way in NBridge ? ( I mean without electric current but without prejudice as to which entrance to use … )
