Well it might as well be Pete F month. Some lovely stuff coming in from him, including this from Medina. A grass tree kicked over and tagged. Perth’s worst grafffiti isn’t the alarmingly haphazard cock stuff, but the tagging of fallen plant material. As if to say, “Temporary rotting plant material, you are my bitch. ” Don’t these things take 100 years to grow?

“Take that grass tree. That’s what you get from growing grass and shit.”
http://www.grasstree.com/
This website says these trees have a lifespan of up to 600 years and can take up to 27 years to grow just 30cm. It’s a bit sad when poor innocent grass trees get the crap kicked out of them.

Crap. I knew this would happen sooner or later. Does that say PFK? As in the radical political party in Mexico? Che would be so proud. Viva la revolucion. Viva the PFK. Muerte to grass trees.

Oh yeah. I bought one of their T shirts when was in Oaxaca. Leader is a dude with a balaclava, smokes a pipe. Carlos I think.

I thought maybe it was Robert Francis Kennedy. But then I remembered he’s dead, so that was unlikely.

It’s by the Retired Friends of Kwinana. This grass tree is long dead which they’d be happy with. Why it hasn’t been industrialized would be their beef.

So, Hovean, they were previously employed to befriend Kwinana and are now retired? I can see that Kwinana would need to pay to have friends…

Team RubyRuby weren’t sure what to call them, as I’d grown up knowing them as blackboys. Doing the research local, we found that they have also been known as balgas. Are we doing the wrong thing by calling them that? Haven’t copped any raised eyebrows or fists, yet, whereas the term “blackboy” wasn’t making Mr RubyRuby very happy at all (he also retains his pommy issues with the term “wog” – looking forward to our trip to Melbourne to catch up with some schoolmates soon…)

Question: is it against the law to destroy one of these trees? In Tucson, AZ, it is against the law to knowingly damage or destroy a saguaro: “Harming a saguaro in any manner, including cactus plugging, is illegal by state law in Arizona, and when houses or highways are built, special permits must be obtained to move or destroy any saguaro affected.”
For those unfamilar, the saguaro is the cliche “Western cactus” of two-armed legend. They are quite amazing if not always pretty.
I had never heard of this plant but it sounds very similar in terms of life cycle.

There are some pics (although small) here. It would be illegal to destroy one on crown land, but you can’t take any plants or even flowers of any kind here full stop. They are pretty common though. An impressive one can be very expensive to buy for a garden. They can grow fairly tall, with several heads and long seed spikes. They used to be referred to as blackboys, but this name is now considered racist.
Heh, this site is so well indexed now, that this post is only a few from the top when searching grass trees perth.

They look fascinating! I am always rather easily impressed by prehistoric plant life. Good to know they are protected.
If you ever have the chance, a trek to the Saguaro National Forest in Tucson is absolutely mind-boggling. One of the most hostile and stark yet mesmerizing landscapes I have ever seen.

I would love to do that. I have only been to the US for half a day, at an airport hotel in Texas, on the way to mexico.
Here are many small grass trees from my real photos BSWAM near my parents’ house, doing what they do best – being burnt.
