If a bloke with a bonce like Garry Shannon doesn’t need to hide behind a piece of paper, then why are Botica and Broadfield so shy? You have to wonder about Botica. This is the half of his face that he shows? The rest must be real horrorshow if it’s worse than the spock ears and the nose that seems to go at 90 degrees. Or is it because he seems to resemble the late George Grljusich? The bunch are no oil paintings either. You’re on radio and not television for a reason, why rub our faces in it with these posters?

What is it about MIX 94.5 and their obsession with music from the eighties? I was forced to listen to it the other day, they played four songs in a row from this mostly dismal decade then the “DJ” announced that they were going to play an “Eighties Double Shot”. This was followed by a five minute ad break and some more shit from INXS and Co. I would nominate this pox ridden radio station for a worst but somehow I don’t I would get much support, more probably a reply outlining how fantastic this music is… blah blah. Nostalgia is to be savoured like an expensive whisky not guzzled like cheap goon for breakfast.

They’re making up for all the 80’s music they cvouldn’t play on the AM Band when they were an Easy Listening Station – they even did an inhouse edit of Lionel ritchie’s Say You Say Me where they edited out the entire middle “Heavy Guitar” bit, and played an MOR version of Two Strong Hearts by Johnny Mathis and Denice Williams, instead of the farnham original.

Back circa 1988 when 6KY still had that “Nice ‘n’ Easy” nonsense going on, we used to have to record two alternate versions of a jingle – the normal one for everyone else, and a watered-down, gentler version for KY. Twice the work for half the pay.
Oh no, now I remember the series of station promo songs we had to record for them..

And do you know what was REALLY a crime, if it wasn’t bad enough for 6PR Giving their vinyl to a primary school fete – 6KY disposed of their vinyl library, which included many rare and delerted recordings, as landfill where the Burswood Casino now stands, while 92.9’s vinyl was given away as competition prize to the most imaginative black entry, which was won by a Dancing School.

I wonder what became of 6WF’s vinyl library? I remember being shown around it by someone who worked there, and I marvelled at some of the white label Parlophone Beatles promo 45s they had. I was lucky enough that day to stroll away with their (battered & sellotaped) Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane picture sleeve, for which I am eternally grateful.

Everything bar the Classical and Australian recordings were Auctioned off a few years ago. This was at the time when the ABC moved from Adedlaide Terrace to their new studios in fielding St and they didn’t want to move it all over.

Oh and I forgot to add that the singles have also survived – though in fairness a lot of the vinyl wasn’t well cared for as they were sent around the state for the various programs and seemingly new pressings had scratches and were skipping and backtracking quite early on.
In fact in the early 80’s Peter Newman was actually given funds to buy from White Rider records new pressings of 50’s and 60’s RocknRoll and Pop Records and Albums to supplement and replaced worn copies.
I also recall David Hawkes complain loudly on air that the recently released Kate Bush “The Whole Story” Best of was already scratched and that there was a click on The Man With The Child In His Eyes.

Actually a couple of odd choices for playlisted tracks on Easy Music 6KY were Sweet 16 by Billy Idol, and MC Hammer”s Have You Seen Her.
Mind you in 1969 6IX when it was a Horse Racing stations would fade out the Fifth Dimension’s Aquarius when it mergeed into “Let The Sunshine In, because it was “Too raucous”.
And the aforementioned 3KZ in 1981 did an edit of Cliff Richard’s Wired For Sound in which the line “AM-FM, I Feel So Esctatic Now” – became “Am-Am”, because they were spooked by the introduction of Commercial FM Radio.

Well the 6IX Story I heasrd from Radio Historian John Cranfield in the 80’s when he used to present the year in review on the ABC with I think Dave Ellery, or was it during the Greg Marston era.
And the Biklly Idol and MC Hammer songs I actually heard them being played.
And more trivia, one of the announcers during the original Beautiful Miusic era besides Jim Beam, was one Adam Joesphs, who in later years became imfamous during his appearance at the CCC with La Chong coining the phrase “The Godfather” at John D’Orazio, under his real name of Adam Spagnolo.

Botica has always hidden his face, I thought it was to maintain his appeal to a(ny) younger audience. As his rusted on audience has gentrified perhaps he’s felt more comfortable letting the veil slip.
Whatever his reasons, the most intriguing aspect to me has always been the unwavering compliance from the rest of Perth’s media in this pathetic affectation. Who else gets that much respect of either their personal or professional reasons for privacy?

It’s just you. If I recall before 94.5 was “No Rap, No Hard Rock, No Ridicule” they were “best of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s” and there were no Bunches, Crews Or Zoos.

Ahh, back when they were KYFM (They’d just converted to FM, and I think Eoiun Cameron was doing Breakfast before he ran for Parliament and had recruited Jeff Warden from The Eagle/6IX who were hoping to get the FM licewnce, but got outbid by Bondy and PMFM – Austereo immediately went to an oldies format and sold the station to Radio west,m which was owned by Fank Romano of Chicken Treat Treat dfame and Barry Martin, and underwent many name/format changes until they relaunched as 6IX under an easy listening format, before being bought out by Southern Cross who turned it back to oldies, before selling it to the Captial Radio/Grant Broadcasters consortium – but for all intents and purposes still use Fairfax facilites, technical staff etc – I call it their half sister station.
Re Shannon at Perth Station – I remember listening to it, and of course Shannon had to mention the Customer Services Assistants, who happened to be Indian.

Who can blame Fred for wanting to hide his face and also to remain somewhat anonymous. With so many nut cases out there today, it must be extremely difficult for any of them to have any sort of privacy. I listen to the radio for a nice background effect to a sometimes humdrum sort of day. The presenters’ private lives and persona should forever remain theirs alone.
