Old Wife

What is worse, the name of this fish, or that the coastline seems to be brought to you by Teh Mormon? They can have more than one old wife right?

I do believe this fish is also known as a grunter. Both names are given for the same reason given below.

“The Old Wife was given its rather derogatory name in reference to the sound it makes by grinding its teeth after it is caught. The dorsal fin spines of the Old Wife contain a venom which can cause severe pain.”

  2. Levon says:

Is this on Rottnest? Maybe it’s a subtle attempt to bring Jesus to Leavers week.

  3. Oh, sorry. it’s at Cottesloe. i went to shoot the sculpture on the seas and only came back with this and a shot of a rubbish bin.

Tell me, tell me, I’ve had three of them so I can well endorse that definition ;)

  5. Ollie Lindsell says:

    wives or fish?

  6. Actually I think it’s young wives, at least for this Mormon splinter group.

    They love a good Shag I’ve heard…

  8. B. Texan says:

#6 LA, yeah, FLDS is a splinter group that allegedly goes for the young ones. Another bunch got busted in Texas recently.

The Church Logo you see in this picture is from the official Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints, They do not practice nor condone the current practice of polygamy. your information I think is corrupted by bias and prejudice.

Also “Old Wife” is singular not plural. You don’t hear about the “Old Wives Fish” do you?

  10. Rolly says:

“…….your information I think is corrupted by bias and prejudice.”

    You reckon ?
Maybe just a broader education and a critical understanding of human motivations.

    Here speaks a serial polygamist.

  11. You are biased and prejudiced “like a fox” Rolly.

  12. skink says:

with an innocent picture of a fish you now risk offending an entire religion. I see the keywords that are tagged, and the blow-ins that it has attracted.

Prepare to be monstered by mormons

    More like a wounded bear!

@#9: Sounds like an old wives tail to me…

    Great innit :D

“…….and the blow-ins that it has attracted.”

Or maybe blow-fish and blow-flies: Similar cranial capabilities.

  17. Does no one else find that Mormonic Logo somewhat threatening? Looks like it’s going to crush OZtaylia.

  18. skink says:

that’s the Coastcare logo – not the Mormon Logo
similar to the Landcare logo, but like blue with waves

I’m not sure whether the Mormons have a logo.

I always wondered – if Catholics wear little crosses with the figure of Jesus around their necks, why don’t Mormons wear little windows with a figure of Joseph Smith going through them?

  19. Coastcare looks like it will throttle us all I tells ya.
Wasn’t Smith beaten to death by angry mob? Not as concise graphically as JC on the cross.

  20. skink says:

Smith was shot whilst trying to escape the mob through a window, and then fell to his death. Consequently all Mormons live in bungalows

Long time listener, first time caller – please be nice ;)

Funnily enough, I live in and around the area this project took place. A large group of youth from the aforementioned church participated in a dune protection project over a number of months some years back. Half decent job too, because the work of this and other coast care volunteers has helped restore the dunes around the northern beaches.

Say what you want about religion, but it’s always good when large groups of people regardless of their denomination, creed, colour or race get together to do something beneficial for the community.

Shutting up now, should have left my greed credentials back in that field north of York today.

  22. Rolly says:

True to a point TW, but some of the more cynical amongst us would feel that good service done with the purpose of proselytising is no service at all.

It’s a standard practice embraced by all religions, political forces and commercial enterprises (the unholy trinity!).

The worst of it is that we all fall for it, over and over again.

  23. This sort of thing just makes me wonder why people just can’t do the good stuff without all the other stupidity that goes along with being a religious crackpot?

We can handle the worst
