Update:

Yagan's Head to be buried in a Memorial Park in Belhus.

More than 170 years after his death, the head of the Noongar warrior, Yagan, will be buried at a memorial park in the Swan Valley.

The Department of Indigenous Affairs has given the City of Swan more than $500,000 to develop the park in his honour.

Yagan's head was severed in Belhus, near Upper Swan, in 1833.

It was preserved and later sent to Great Britain as an artefact.

The head was returned to WA in 1997 and will finally be buried at the Swan Valley site.

The Yagan Memorial Park will be open to the public.

The statue is in a fenced-off area, but it's designed to keep the kangaroos in, not the humans out. So you can still get to Yagan if you feel the need to take a few photos with him :)

Thats definately good idea TIB problem with lots of these aussie memorialisations of various identities ;-schmaltzy and moderate depictions allowed only[gets in the way of australian culture being less shallow]. One imagines this would esp apply to an aboriginal monument. And its a shame. I'm sure there would be a compulsion to have the word sorry dominate its symbology as well. Effecting such a monument as anything other than political propaganda.

And as with architecture any commissioning out of important projects such as our public and other major building infrastructure including monuments should not only be given over to the politicians and local councilors [and their business mates] to decide but this needs to have input from a panel of independant art professionals, and the public [at least the ones concerned about good design etc],
over last twenty odd years in this era of extremely high standard quality of architecture[one of the greatest and most creative periods for architecture ever] most of it just doesnt come australia's way through lack of open procedures.

That's a very ordinary statue. I've not seen it before, but it appears to be a bog standard, classical, muscular torso and limbs topped with the head and hairstyle of a 1930s Hollywood starlet. About the only thing I can see which is distinctively Aboriginal is the spear (and even that appears more like a weightlifters barbell halfway through a lift).

I would take a lot of persuading that Yagan actually looked like that or even remotely similar.

How about a campaign for a proper (ie competently executed rather than lifted from stock sources) statue of Yagan?

Let's just say that that side of the family ain't exactly close. I doubt dear Uncle Robert would even recognise me if I passed him on the street. It's taken me a good fifteen years of hard work in avoiding them to get this result and hopefully it will last!
